Walter J. Hannon Parkway Opens with Celebration

Sunday, October 2, 2011

The Walter J. Hannon Parkway officially opened shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2011.  Former Mayor Hannon and his wife, Patricia, made the first drive on the concourse in a shiny, black 1951 Mercury.

On hand to celebrate were a long list of city and state officials and dignitaries, including former Mayors Tobin, Sheets, McCauley, and Phelan, and current Mayor Thomas Koch.

The new half-mile Hannon Parkway is the final link to the $18 million Quincy Center Concourse that completes the connection between Route 3 and Interstate 93 to downtown Quincy and Southern Artery. Local officials and business leaders say its completion will pave the way for a $1.6 billion redevelopment project now planned for Quincy Center.
